Naval Chief Visits North East Theatre, Calls for Stronger Joint Operations

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has called for enhanced joint operations among the Armed Forces to consolidate gains in the fight against terrorism in the North East.

Vice Admiral Abbas made the call on Thursday during a visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The visit was aimed at strengthening operational synergy and assessing ongoing military efforts in the theatre.
Addressing troops, the Naval Chief extended New Year greetings and commended their courage, resilience and sacrifices in defending the nation.

He conveyed the appreciation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the successes recorded in curbing terrorist activities and urged personnel to sustain the momentum.

The CNS emphasised that effective collaboration among the Armed Forces improves operational efficiency, ensures rapid response to threats and strengthens national security.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to sustaining a strong presence on the Lake Chad waterways to support peace, security and economic recovery in the region.

Vice Admiral Abbas noted that the reopening of critical waterways has significantly boosted socio-economic activities, allowing fishermen, farmers, traders and transport operators to resume their livelihoods. He stressed that sustained naval presence and close coordination with other services remain vital to securing these gains and supporting local communities.

Earlier, the Theatre Commander, Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, welcomed the Naval Chief and briefed him on ongoing operations.

He acknowledged the key role of the Nigerian Navy in the Lake Chad Islands, noting that maritime dominance has been critical to operational success and regional stability.
As part of the visit, the CNS conducted an on-the-spot assessment of naval facilities at the Naval Base Annex along Monguno Road, proceeded to the Naval Base Lake Chad Command in Baga, and interacted with troops at Fish Dam.

He also undertook a riverine patrol of the Lake Chad waterways to assess the level of clearance achieved. The operational visit concluded with a New Year luncheon with troops at Fish Dam.

The Naval Chief also paid a courtesy visit to the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, thanking him for his support and assuring him of continued collaboration to safeguard waterways and promote socio-economic growth.

Governor Zulum commended the Navy’s efforts and urged intensified operations to sustain peace in the state.

The visit brought together senior military and naval officers, including the Deputy Theatre Commander, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, component commanders and principal staff officers, and featured operational briefings, interactive sessions and ceremonial exchanges.
