The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced preliminary work on the construction of the Nmanai Bridge across the Brigade River in Taraba State, with the laying of stones to create a temporary passage for vehicles.
Our correspondent who visited the project site observed the deployment of heavy machinery depositing stones into the riverbed, aimed at easing access for motorists pending the commencement of full-scale construction.
According to sources close to the project, the temporary structure will span 120 metres, divided into 12-metre segments. As of the time of visit, 47 metres had already been covered to facilitate movement across the river.
In addition, steel pipes intended for substructure installation beneath the river are reportedly en route from Lagos to Taraba.
However, it was gathered that the construction company handling the project has not yet received mobilisation funds. Reliable sources indicated that major construction activities will begin once the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approves and disburses the necessary funding.
Despite the funding delay, local residents have resorted to using boats to ferry vehicles across the river, capitalising on the recent reduction in water levels.
The NEDC intervention is considered vital to restoring transportation and economic connectivity in the area, especially as river crossings often become impassable during the rainy season.
Community leaders and residents have lauded the commission’s efforts, expressing hope that the full construction phase will commence without further delay.
