New Minimum Wage To Take Effect May 1

The Federal Government has announced that the new national minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024, despite the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage still negotiating the final details.

Minister of State Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made this announcement on Wednesday during the May Day celebration in Abuja, addressing Nigerian workers.

She acknowledged that it is regrettable that the new national minimum wage is not ready yet, but assured that a wide consultation is ongoing to ensure the document is finalized as soon as possible.

In a related development, President Bola Tinubu praised the contributions of Nigerian workers to the country’s growth during his address at the 2024 Workers’ Day event in Abuja, presented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He expressed the Federal Government’s openness to receiving the recommendations of the committee on the new national minimum wage, assuring that the current administration’s reform agenda is geared towards Nigeria’s progress.
