NGO, IPAS Launch GBV, Menstrual Health Project in Magumeri

A non-governmental organisation, Zenith of the Girl Child and Women Initiative Support, in partnership with IPAS Nigeria Health Foundation, has launched a rapid response project in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno aimed at addressing school-related gender-based violence and menstrual health challenges.

The initiative was unveiled during a courtesy visit and inception meeting with key stakeholders in Magumeri, described as one of the state’s steadily recovering communities.

The project seeks to tackle school-related gender-based violence (GBV), menstrual health and hygiene management through the establishment of school-based clubs and strengthened community participation.

Speaking during the visit, the team lead, Aishatu Kabu Damboa, said the intervention was designed to support school retention and prevent sexual and gender-based violence by empowering adolescent girls and parents to adopt zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse.

She noted that gender-based violence remains a widespread human rights violation globally, with heightened risks in conflict-affected settings where women and girls are exposed to abuse and discrimination.

Citing a 2022 report by UNESCO, she said menstrual poverty continues to pose a significant barrier to girls’ education, with many missing between three and five days of school monthly — amounting to about 20 per cent of the academic year.

According to her, the project will promote community action and participation in safeguarding girls, while strengthening awareness on menstrual hygiene management to improve attendance and academic performance.

As part of the engagement, the team paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Magumeri LGA, Prof. Ali Yaumi, and the Local Government Education Secretary.

The chairman commended the initiative and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote education, health and protection of vulnerable groups in the area.

The meeting was attended by traditional and religious leaders, teachers, representatives of the Nigeria Police and other critical stakeholders.

Participants pledged collaboration to ensure the success and sustainability of the project in the community.
