Nigeria, Brazil Sign $1bn Agricultural Agreement To Boost Food Production

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Brazil have signed a $1 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on an agricultural mechanisation initiative aimed at enhancing food production and ensuring food security in the country.

The agreement was formalised on Tuesday in Abuja during the visit of the Vice President of Brazil, Mr. Geraldo Alckmin, who is on a three-day official visit to Nigeria. He was received by Nigeria’s Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

President Tinubu, in a statement, said the bilateral engagement underscores the enduring ties between Nigeria and Brazil, adding that both nations are committed to fostering inclusive growth through strategic cooperation.

“As our Brazilian friends say, ‘Juntos somos mais fortes’, together we are stronger. Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and tangible results for our citizens,” he stated.

According to the President, the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme will serve as the flagship of the renewed partnership. The programme is a bilateral agricultural mechanisation initiative driven by Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and key private sector players.

He explained that the partnership will transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through large-scale technology transfer, capacity building, and the establishment of service centres across the six geopolitical zones.

During the high-level visit, more than 30 additional MoUs are expected to be signed, covering a wide range of strategic areas including defence and security cooperation, energy collaboration and transition initiatives, trade facilitation, cultural and educational exchange programmes, and industrial development.

Tinubu noted that the renewed partnership with Brazil would also extend to Nigeria’s participation at the upcoming COP30 Climate Conference scheduled to hold in Belém, Brazil, as both countries seek closer collaboration on climate action, environmental resilience, and energy transition.

“This engagement reaffirms the close ties between our two democracies, united by shared values, historical connections, and a common ambition for people-focused development,” Tinubu added.

The visit is part of broader diplomatic efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations, boost economic cooperation, and attract investments into priority sectors such as agriculture, energy, innovation, and infrastructure.
