Nigerian Professor Stabbed to Death by Son in US — Police

The New Orleans Police Department has arrested a 27-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuebuka Eweni, for allegedly killing his father, a university professor, and injuring his two sisters in a domestic stabbing incident on Pebble Street.

The deceased, identified by family members as Professor Samuel Eweni, taught computer science at Southern University at New Orleans. Relatives told local station WWL Louisiana that the attack was sudden and devastating, noting that the suspect had a history of mental illness but no known history of violence.

One of the injured sisters has been discharged from hospital, while the other remains admitted but is expected to recover, according to the local outlet.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the New Orleans Police Department confirmed that the suspect was located in Jefferson Parish and taken into custody while undergoing medical evaluation.

“Chukwuebuka Eweni has been located in Jefferson Parish. He is currently in law enforcement custody while undergoing medical evaluation at an area facility,” the police said.

The incident occurred at about 9:59 p.m. on November 11. Responding officers found the deceased unresponsive with fatal stab wounds, while the two injured victims were transported to a hospital.

Detectives said they have secured an arrest warrant for one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

“This suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous,” the statement added.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will release the official cause of death after conducting an autopsy and notifying the family.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
