The Joint Revenue Board (JRB), in collaboration with the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), has announced the official launch of the Nigerian Tax Identification (Tax ID) Portal, scheduled to go live on January 1, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise and streamline tax administration across the country.
The new digital platform is designed to provide a unified and efficient system for the identification of all taxable persons in Nigeria, enhancing transparency, efficiency and ease of compliance in the nation’s tax system.
According to the announcement, the Tax Identification (Tax ID) is a unique, system-generated number that will be assigned to every taxable individual and organisation in Nigeria for the purpose of tax administration. The initiative aims to harmonise taxpayer records across federal, state and local government revenue authorities.
Under the new system, individual taxpayers will have their Tax ID linked to their National Identification Number (NIN), while non-individual taxpayers, including businesses and organisations, will have their Tax ID linked to their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.
This integration is expected to eliminate duplication, reduce errors and improve the accuracy of taxpayer data nationwide.
The JRB explained that individuals can retrieve their Tax ID by visiting the official portal at http://www.taxid.jtb.gov.ng or http://www.taxid.nrs.gov.ng, clicking on the “Individual” tab, selecting National Identification Number (NIN), and entering their 11-digit NIN.
Applicants will then be required to provide their first name, last name and date of birth exactly as captured by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), after which a 13-digit Tax ID will be generated and displayed.
For registered entities, the process involves selecting the “Corporate” tab on the portal, choosing the appropriate organisation type, entering the relevant CAC registration number, and clicking on “Retrieve Tax ID,” after which a 13-digit Tax ID will be issued.
