The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has pledged support for the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) as it marks its golden jubilee anniversary and re-launch of its Endowment Fund scheduled for November 2025.
The commitment was part of a communique issued at the end of the Forum’s 12th meeting, held on Saturday in Jalingo, Taraba State, and signed by the Chairman of the Forum, Gov. Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno.
The Forum described the institution as a “legacy university” in the subregion, acknowledging its contributions to education, research, and manpower development in Nigeria over the past 50 years.
“The Forum congratulates the University of Maiduguri for its golden jubilee. It also expresses its willingness to support the 50th anniversary celebration and the re-launch of the University Endowment Fund,” the communique stated.
The governors assured that the North-East states would work collectively to strengthen the university, given its strategic importance to human capital development in the subregion.
Beyond education, the Forum also deliberated on security, agriculture, energy, and climate change. It expressed concern over the high cost of agricultural inputs and warned of a possible food crisis unless subsidies and support for dry-season farming were urgently provided.
