The North-East sub-region has recorded a milestone in academia with the emergence of Prof. Yakaka Bilkisu Bukar Maina as the first female Professor of Energy and Environmental Development in the region.
Prof. Maina, an indigene of Yobe State, was promoted to the rank of professor by the Senate of the University of Maiduguri, where she currently serves as a lecturer.
Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State congratulated the academic on her promotion, describing the achievement as a landmark for the North-East and a source of pride to the state.
The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the governor, in Damaturu.
Buni described Maina as a distinguished scholar in energy, environmental development and climate resilience, noting that her academic contributions focus on providing practical solutions to energy and environmental challenges, especially in vulnerable and conflict-affected communities.
He further noted that Prof. Maina also serves as a consultant with the Food and Agriculture Organization, where she supports programmes on natural resource management, clean energy and sustainable livelihoods.
The governor prayed for Allah’s guidance and blessings upon her new status and urged her to remain committed to excellence, mentorship and research that would continue to bring honour to the North-East sub-region.
