Residents of Old Maiduguri in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State have appealed to the state government to construct a proper drainage system along Khurso Bashir Street to curb persistent flooding and erosion in the area.
In a letter addressed to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the residents, led by Mr. Adam Mustapha Ali, described the situation as a critical environmental and infrastructural challenge that worsens during the rainy season.
According to the residents, the absence of a functional drainage system has led to severe flooding, land degradation, and property damage. They warned that stagnant water had also become a breeding ground for disease-carrying insects, increasing health risks in the community.
“The erosion problem has reached an alarming stage, with portions of land dangerously close to residential boundaries being washed away. Without prompt action, this could lead to the collapse of buildings, displacement of residents, and further environmental degradation,” the letter read.
The community urged the Borno State Government to construct a proper drainage system, implement erosion control measures, and embark on community sensitisation on proper waste disposal to sustain the infrastructure.
They said the intervention would safeguard lives and property, improve sanitation, enhance road accessibility, and boost the overall quality of life for residents.
The residents expressed confidence in the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of citizens and called for urgent action.
