The Federal Government has disbursed N3.7 billion to about 2,000 workers across tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), an intervention programme aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The disbursement, confirmed on Friday by the Federal Ministry of Education, is part of efforts to strengthen the welfare of staff in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
According to the Ministry, the initial tranche of the fund covered 43 tertiary institutions. Breakdown of the distribution shows that academic staff accounted for 17 per cent of beneficiaries, while non-academic staff received 83 per cent. The gender distribution also indicated an 83 per cent male and 17 per cent female participation rate.
“The Ministry acknowledges this disparity and will intensify efforts to encourage greater application uptake among female staff to ensure gender parity in future tranches,” the statement added.
Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the support fund represents more than financial aid, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for those who sustain Nigeria’s education sector.
“The TISSF is a tangible expression of the Federal Government’s appreciation for the backbone of our education system,” Alausa said. “By swiftly disbursing these funds, we are keeping our solemn promise to enhance the welfare, productivity, and dignity of our staff, thereby strengthening our institutions for the future.”
The initiative is expected to continue with additional phases as the government works toward improved staff welfare and a more resilient tertiary education system.
