The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has ruled out joining any political merger or coalition, affirming the party’s independence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was part of the key resolutions contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting held on Monday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The governors, however, noted that the party remains open to welcoming individuals and groups interested in joining its ranks as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
The Forum also maintained its earlier position on the appointment of a substantive National Secretary, recommending that the Deputy National Secretary continue in acting capacity pending the emergence of a nominee from the South East.
On national security, the governors expressed deep concern over the spate of violent attacks across the country, particularly the recent killings in Plateau State.
They called for a bottom-up security approach that empowers sub-national governments to play more active roles in maintaining law and order.
The Forum also expressed strong solidarity with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and disclosed plans to approach the Supreme Court for legal clarity on the constitutional procedure for declaring a state of emergency in any state.
In further resolutions, the PDP Governors announced that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will hold on May 27, 2025, while the National Convention is scheduled for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano.
To facilitate preparations, the Forum named key committee members for the events. The Zoning Committee will be chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chair and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.
The Convention Committee will be headed by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chair and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary.
The governors also extended appreciation to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for hosting the meeting.
