Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended two students and one other on charges of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and association with an unlawful cultist society.
A statement by the command’s spokesman, Ahmed Wakili, made available on Friday, identified the suspects as Hoomvez Martins Nyelong, 27, also known as “Slim”, Daniel Audu Adamu 26, and Maigari Inuwa 29, also known as “Mega Fashion World”
The statement revealed that two of the suspects were students of the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University, Bauchi, ATBU while one of them claimed to have graduated from University of Jos.
Their arrests followed a distress call received on February 18 from one Abubakar Shehu (pseudonym), a 45-year-old resident of Kuhu village in Durum ward, Bauchi Local Government Area.
The said Shehu reportedly discovered the corpse of an unidentified deceased young man in a bush in the outskirts of Kuhu village.
Responding swiftly, the Patrol Team from C Division was said to have evacuated the body to the ATBU Teaching Hospital Bauchi, where a medical examination confirmed the victim’s death.
The Spokesman revealed further that another distress call was received at 5pm on the same day reporting another corpse discovered in the same location.
He mentioned that exhibits recovered at the scene include:- pieces of razor blades, empty bottles of water, empty bottles of alcohol, empty sachets of water, candles, sticks with blood stains and torn short trousers.
Wakili added that upon investigation, no signs of physical injury or violence were observed on either body, although the eyes of the second victim were forcibly punctured.
He disclosed that the suspects were spotted roaming in the area adding that when interrogated, they failed to provide a satisfactory account of their activities.
According to him, Investigation by the Police revealed that the suspects were members of a cult group who were behind the gruesome killing of the two deceased persons.
His words “Further investigation revealed that the first suspect (Hoomvez Martins Nyelong) was seen in the area where the first corpse was found with two others in the early hours of Sunday, 18/2/2024.
“Also, WhatsApp chats found in his mobile phone revealed that he was the one that dropped off the first corpse whose relatives appeared and identified him to be one Reheboth Joseph Deshi 32 years old of Rafin Zurfi Yelwa area Bauchi.”
“While an investigation is still ongoing, efforts have been intensified to burst their enclaves and arrest the remaining accomplice.”
