The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested 15 suspects in connection with a violent clash in the Kandahar area of Bauchi metropolis, which resulted in the burning of a government primary school and the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) office.
A statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Ahmed Wakil, said the incident occurred on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19, following an altercation between a group of youths and members of the Civilian JTF.
Wakil said the unrest began when youths attacked civilians in the area, setting fire to the JTF office and part of Kandahar Primary School.
He added that one of the attackers, 22-year-old Saidu Musa, sustained gunshot wounds to the chest during the clash and was taken to the Specialist Hospital for treatment.
“The attack was carried out by disgruntled youths angry over an earlier encounter with the Civilian JTF in the Kandahar area,” Wakil said.
He explained that detectives from the ‘A’ Division Police Headquarters responded swiftly to a distress call and restored order in the community.
“On Dec. 18, 2024, at about 08:30 hours, our operatives received information about a group of youths engaging in violent behavior in Kandahar. The group attacked civilians and targeted the Civilian JTF office and Kandahar Primary School,” he said.
Wakil said preliminary investigations revealed that the youths regrouped on Dec. 19 and launched an attack on the JTF office and the school.
“With the timely intervention of Police operatives, the situation was brought under control. Fifteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing,” he added.
The police spokesman assured residents that efforts were being made to ensure the safety of lives and property in the area.
