The Gombe State Police Command has dismissed allegations of police brutality circulating on social media following an incident that occurred on Tuesday morning at the Union Bank Roundabout in Gombe metropolis.
In a statement issued on December 17, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the Command explained that the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. during the enforcement of the ban on motorcycles carrying more than two passengers.
According to the police, a patrol team intercepted a motorcycle rider, identified as Haruna Mohammed, 42, of Wuro Baduku, who was conveying three passengers on a red Boxer motorcycle with registration number YDB 25 VE, in violation of traffic regulations.
The Command stated that the rider attempted to evade arrest after being flagged down, sped off, lost control of the motorcycle, and collided with a tricycle, resulting in minor bruises. He was immediately taken to the Specialist Hospital, Gombe, where he was treated and discharged.
Following the incident, some motorcycle riders reportedly mobilised and attacked police officers with stones, causing a brief disturbance and obstruction of the main road at the roundabout.
The statement said additional police teams from nearby formations were promptly deployed to the scene, while reinforcement led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations restored calm.
“Normalcy has since been fully restored, one suspect has been arrested, and members of the public are now going about their lawful businesses without hindrance,” the Command said.
The police categorically denied any extrajudicial action, describing claims of police brutality as false, misleading, and unfounded.
The Command urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on information from official and credible sources, adding that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
