Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have successfully defused an unexploded ordnance planted beneath a telecommunications network mast at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area of Maiduguri, averting a potential explosion and threat to public safety.
The operation followed a report received on Monday, December 15, 2025, by the Divisional Police Officer of ITE Police Division, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso.
Daso said the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately directed the Commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13, Maiduguri, to mobilise to the scene upon receipt of the report.
“The Borno State Police Command has recorded another operational success with the recovery of an unexploded ordnance in Maiduguri, thereby averting a potential explosion and serious threat to public safety,” the statement read.
He explained that the EOD-CBRN team swiftly cordoned off the area and, in line with standard operating procedures, successfully rendered the device safe.
According to preliminary findings, the device, which had two protruding wires, was strategically planted by yet-to-be-identified persons with the intention of causing significant damage. Items recovered at the scene included a hand plier, a T-shirt and a pair of shoes.
Following the operation, the police conducted sensitisation and safety awareness sessions for residents of the area, emphasising the need for vigilance, prompt reporting of suspicious objects and cooperation with security agencies to prevent security breaches.
The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police had directed all Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and strengthen security around critical public and private infrastructure, particularly communication facilities and other sensitive assets.
Daso reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to continue to support the police with timely and credible information.
“While investigation is ongoing, the situation has been brought under control and normal activities have since resumed in the area. Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant,” he said.
The incident is the latest in a series of similar recoveries in the state. In August, operatives of the command uncovered an unexploded ordnance on farmland in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
