Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has attributed the resurgence of Boko Haram insurgency in the North East to widespread poverty and illiteracy among the population.
The governor made this known on Monday in Damaturu, during a courtesy visit by participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 18 from the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS).
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, Buni said addressing the root causes of insurgency is crucial for restoring peace and stability in the region.
“Illiteracy and poverty have played a significant role in the re-emergence of Boko Haram. It is very important that we continue to work on these issues,” he stated.
The governor stressed that lasting peace could only be achieved through deliberate efforts to improve education and reduce poverty through empowerment programmes and social interventions.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to educational reforms, including school rehabilitation and the recruitment of qualified teachers, to uplift the standard of learning in the state.
Earlier, the leader of the NISS delegation, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Yar’adua, said the team was in the state as part of a study tour to assess the security situation and identify strategies that could inform national policy on security management.
He added that the team’s findings would contribute to a comprehensive report to guide future decisions on addressing insecurity in Nigeria.
