A prominent Sunni Islamic cleric, Dr Idris Abdulaziz, has passed away on Thursday after battling an undisclosed illness.
The death of the renowned scholar was confirmed by the official Facebook page of his mosque, Dutsen Tanshi Majlis, Bauchi. His funeral is scheduled to hold at Games Village Eid Ground, Bauchi, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
In accordance with his will, the late preacher instructed that no photographs be taken at his funeral, banned memorial gatherings at his residence, and forbade people from jostling for his corpse or entering the cemetery with shoes.
Dr Abdulaziz was known for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and his engagements in religious discourses. He obtained a degree in Islamic Law from the Islamic University of Madinah and later earned a Ph.D. in Islamic Jurisprudence from Sudan.
He was a controversial figure, often at odds with successive Bauchi State administrations, traditional rulers, the police, and fellow clerics from both the Izala and Tariqa sects.
Reacting to his death, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, expressed his condolences and prayed for the deceased’s soul to be granted Jannatul Firdaus.
