A devastating rainstorm swept through Tsohon Garin Nangere in Nangere Local Government Area of Yobe State, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the life of a 7-year-old boy.
The torrential rain, accompanied by violent winds, struck the community at approximately 9:00 AM on Friday, catching residents off guard as they went about their daily activities.
Reports from the scene indicate that 20 people sustained serious injuries, while approximately 50 houses and shops were destroyed by the heavy rain. The storm’s ferocity was intense, leaving a significant portion of the community in ruins.
The tragic incident occurred as the Yobe Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), commenced a state-level workshop on community engagement and sensitization on flood preparedness and the development of the 2024 emergency preparedness and contingency plan.
The workshop aims to share local response mechanisms, link community-based strategies to state-level efforts, and develop a community-based emergency preparedness and contingency plan.
The initiative seeks to enhance the state’s preparedness and response to natural disasters, such as the devastating rainstorm that struck Tsohon Garin Nangere.
The Yobe State Government has been urged to provide immediate assistance to the affected community, including shelter, medical care, and food support. The government has also been called upon to invest in infrastructure development, including drainage systems and flood control measures, to mitigate the impact of future natural disasters.
