Ramadan Crescent Sighted in Nigeria, Fasting to Begin Wednesday

The Sultan of Sokoto has instructed Muslims across Nigeria to begin fasting for the holy month of Ramadan on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The directive follows reports of the Ramadan crescent sighted in multiple locations across the country, which were confirmed by local authorities. The Sultan’s palace made the announcement on Tuesday evening.

The Sultan urged Nigerians to observe the fast with devotion and to pray for peace and stability in the country.

Saudi authorities had earlier reported the crescent sighting and instructed Muslims to commence fasting on the same date.

Ramadan is observed worldwide by Muslims as a period of fasting, spiritual reflection, and charitable deeds. It is also the month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Religious scholars advise increased reading of the Qur’an, regular remembrance of Allah (dhikr), nightly prayers, charity, and self-restraint during the month. Visiting hospitals and prisons to support the needy is also encouraged as a means of earning spiritual rewards.
