In a significant move to address menstrual health and hygiene among vulnerable adolescent girls, 32 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Yobe State on Thursday organized a sensitization campaign in the Nayi Nawa community of Damaturu Local Government Area.
The campaign, which took place today as part of the Corp members’ End of Service Year activities, brought together over 150 adolescent girls from the community. The event, sponsored by SEMA, aimed to educate the girls on menstrual hygiene, toilet infections, ovulation, and overall health promotion.
Out of the 32 Corp members, 25 facilitated the program, which was divided into three key sections. The first session focused on menstrual hygiene, equipping the girls with essential knowledge on how to care for themselves during their periods.
The second session addressed the prevention of toilet infections and proper hygiene practices, while the third session was centered on health promotion, with particular emphasis on reproductive health and wellbeing.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, who officiated the event, highlighted the importance of the campaign and commended the Corp members for their dedication.
To encourage active participation, prizes were given to girls who answered the facilitators’ questions correctly. In addition, each of the 150 girls received a menstrual hygiene kit, which included two packs of sanitary pads, two pieces of bar soap, detergent, and underwear.
“This initiative is critical for empowering these young girls with the knowledge and tools they need to manage their health effectively,” the Executive Secretary remarked during the event’s opening ceremony.
The campaign, which marks an important aspect of the Corp members’ community development service, is expected to leave a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of the Nayi Nawa community.
