Senate Passes Bill to Retain Nigerian Army University, Biu as Military Institution

The Senate on Wednesday passed the third reading of a bill seeking to retain the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB), as an Army-owned and Army-maintained institution.

The passage of the bill marks a major legislative milestone for Borno South Senatorial District and followed sustained efforts by the senator representing the district, Mohammed Ali Ndume, who sponsored and championed the amendment to protect the university’s legal and institutional status.

Senator Ndume had argued that the bill was necessary to safeguard the original military mandate and strategic importance of the university, particularly in the areas of national security, research and civil-military relations in the North-East.

With the Senate’s approval, the bill has now been transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence. Upon passage by the House, it will be forwarded to the President for assent.

The Nigerian Army University, Biu, is widely regarded as a key strategic institution in Borno South, playing a critical role in education and security-focused research, especially in a region affected by insurgency and post-conflict rebuilding.

Following the Senate’s action, attention has shifted to the Borno South caucus in the House of Representatives, comprising Hon. Betara Aliyu, Hon. Ahmed Jaha and Hon. Dr. Midala Usman Balami, who are expected to mobilise support to ensure the speedy consideration and passage of the bill.
