The Senate has recalled Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi from his three-month suspension, two weeks before its expiration. Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, was suspended on March 12, 2024, for accusing the Senate of budget padding.
The recall process was initiated on Tuesday after a motion moved by Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, who expressed regret on behalf of the suspended senator. Moro pledged to assume full responsibility for Ningi’s actions, acknowledging the gravity of the suspension.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the unconditional recall of Ningi after a brief plea by some lawmakers. This decision comes after Ningi sparked controversy by alleging that projects worth N3.7 trillion were untraceable in the 2024 budget, prompting a backlash from Nigerians.
Akpabio had previously criticized Ningi’s allegations, stating that they had damaged the integrity of the Senate and eroded public trust. Ningi was subsequently interrogated at plenary and accused of mischief, leading to his suspension.
The recall of Ningi has raised eyebrows, with some questioning the sudden change of heart by the Senate leadership. The development is seen as a rare instance of clemency in the upper chamber.
Ningi’s recall is effective immediately, and he is expected to resume his duties as a senator representing Bauchi Central.
