Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan has introduced a bill (SB185) to establish the Federal University of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship in Bama, Borno State, to address Nigeria’s persistent youth unemployment crisis.
The proposed university will focus on agriculture and entrepreneurship education, providing students with practical skills and entrepreneurial acumen to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
Senator Lawan emphasized that conventional education often fails to guarantee employment, necessitating specialized training that equips students with practical skills and entrepreneurial acumen.
He cited alarming statistics, including 1.4 million Nigerians competing for 5,000 jobs in the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The university aims to transform the narrative by providing students with the tools to create and manage their own ventures, generating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
Located in Bama, a hub of Boko Haram devastation, the university will also address national security concerns by engaging youth in positive development and promoting critical thinking to resist extremist ideologies.
The bill has passed its first reading and is expected to have a significant impact on youth employment and national development. Senator Lawan’s vision is seen as a beacon of hope for transformative change in Nigeria’s education sector.
