In a bid to resolve the ongoing nationwide strike, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has summoned organised labour to an emergency meeting.
The meeting aims to address the contentious issue of a new national minimum wage, which has led to a paralysis of economic activities across the country.
Comrade Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), confirmed the meeting to our correspondent on Monday, June 3.
According to Osifo, labour leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and TUC are en route to the SGF office for the emergency meeting.
“Yes, we are heading there now,” Osifo said, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
A source attending the meeting revealed that the outcome would determine whether labour would call off the strike, which has brought economic activities to a standstill on Monday.
The strike follows a deadlock in discussions between the federal government, the organised private sector, and labour over the proposed new minimum wage. Labour is demanding a minimum wage of N494,000, while the government has proposed N60,000, leaving a significant gap between the two parties.
