The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai, has said the 73-year-old Gwange graveyard is being overused, asking residents to utilise other cemeteries for burials in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State.
The monarch, who addressed a press conference over what he described as “disturbing situation”, on Thursday, said Maiduguri and Jere have 126 graveyards but people only take their dead to Gwange for burial.
“From the report I have gotten, we have126 graveyards in Maiduguri and Jere but Gwange graveyard built since 1950 has never closed for one day. People always take their dead to the 73-year-old graveyard,” he said.
He called on the state governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum to intervene by way of providing water and other facilities that encourage people to bury their loved ones in all the other cemeteries in the town.
“We are aware of the numerous projects that the governor is executing but this project is equally very important for the people,” he said.
