A soldier shot and killed a civilian, Habibu Aminu, in Lere Village, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, following an altercation between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and personnel of Operation Safe Haven.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the incident occurred when PDP members from Lere Village were stopped at a checkpoint while returning from a campaign event.
They refused to stop and proceeded to Lere town, leading to the arrest of one of the drivers. The group then attempted to free the arrested driver, resulting in the soldier opening fire and killing Aminu.
The police responded promptly, dispatching a unit of the Mobile Police Force to the area and constituting a team of detectives to investigate the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Muhammad, assured that the officers involved would be identified and held accountable according to the law.
