Study UK in Nigeria: FG unveils ‘UK Degree at Home’ plan

The Federal Government has secured a partnership with Coventry University to establish a campus in Nigeria under its “UK Degree at Home” initiative aimed at expanding access to globally recognised degrees.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the ministry, the initiative is part of a Transnational Education (TNE) arrangement designed to provide affordable international-standard education within the country.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is currently in the United Kingdom alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where discussions are ongoing with university authorities, investors and development partners to facilitate the project.

The proposed campus will be located at Alaro City and is expected to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

The ministry stated that degrees awarded at the campus would be equivalent to those obtained in the United Kingdom.

It added that admissions are projected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Alausa said the initiative would enable Nigerian students to access world-class education locally at reduced cost, while improving skills development and employability.

“We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” he said.

The ministry noted that the project is being supported by the UK Department for Business and Trade as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.

It reiterated government’s commitment to positioning the country as a hub for knowledge, skills and innovation through strategic international partnerships.
