Sultan declares Friday for Eid-el-Fitr

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has declared Friday, March 20, as the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr in Nigeria.

The announcement followed the non-sighting of the crescent moon marking the end of Ramadan across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Sultanate Council said it did not receive any confirmed report of the Shawwal 1447AH crescent from any part of the country.

According to the statement, Thursday, March 19, will complete the 30 days of Ramadan, making Friday, March 20, the first day of Shawwal 1447AH.

The Sultan urged Muslims to use the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr to pray for peace, unity and sustained progress in Nigeria.

He also called on the faithful to continue to uphold the virtues of patience, sacrifice and piety imbibed during the holy month of Ramadan.
