Suspected Thief Dies While Attempting to Steal Armoured Cables in Yola

A man suspected to be an armoured cable thief was on Saturday found dead near a transformer at the Malkohi 1000 Housing Estate in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Residents said the corpse of the unidentified man was discovered in the early hours of the day beside one of the electricity transformers within the estate.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said they believed the man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise the transformer and steal high-tension armoured cables.

“He was found lying motionless close to the transformer with some tools beside him. From the look of things, he may have been trying to cut the cables when power was restored,” one resident said.

Security operatives and officials of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) later arrived at the scene to assess the situation and evacuate the body.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the police regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, residents have called on authorities to beef up security in the estate to forestall a recurrence.
