Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has established a seven-member committee to advise on the implementation of local government autonomy, following a recent Supreme Court judgment granting full autonomy to local government councils across Nigeria.
The committee, inaugurated on Monday in Jalingo, the state capital, is tasked with guiding the government on the implementation of local government autonomy, with a focus on oversight functions, capacity building, financial autonomy, administrative reforms, security coordination, community engagements, evaluation, and feedback.
Governor Kefas emphasized the significance of the committee’s work in achieving democratic, accountable, and efficient governance.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to decentralization and local empowerment, as demonstrated by the conduct of local government elections on November 18, 2023, and the swearing-in of chairmen on November 23, 2023.
The committee’s chairman, Abel Peter Diah, acknowledged the importance of financial autonomy for local government councils, hailing the Supreme Court verdict as a victory for democracy and good governance.
