The Taraba State Government has expressed deep sadness and concern over the recent vandalism of four transmission line towers along the Jos-Gombe 330kV line on April 22, 2024. The sabotage has resulted in a widespread blackout, affecting millions of residents in the state and the North-East region.
In a press statement held in Jalingo on Thursday, Engr. Naomi Tanko Agbu, Commissioner of Energy and Economic Development, described the act as “economic vandalism” that undermines the stability of the electrical system, putting lives and livelihoods at risk.
She emphasized that the deliberate destruction of these towers represents a blatant disregard for the well-being and prosperity of the region.
The Commissioner assured residents that the state government is taking the matter seriously and has been working tirelessly with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) to address the situation.
She expressed disappointment over the lengthy response time from the Federal Government, which she described as “comp individuals attempting to vandalize electrical infrastructure.
She also urged sister states in the North-East region to take decisive actions to safeguard electrical infrastructure, emphasizing that an attack on one is an attack on all.
The Commissioner acknowledged the frustration and inconvenience caused by the disruption but assured that the state government is committed to doing everything possible to ensure normalcy is restored and measures are put in place to prevent future incidents of vandalism.
