Governor Agbu Kefas has reiterated his commitment to making Taraba State the ultimate hub of food production, unveiling 250 tractors and other farm implements purchased from the Czech Republic.
The machines are part of his administration’s efforts to ensure food security and make the state self-sufficient in food production.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, Governor Kefas emphasized that the tractors will go directly to farmers, with a subsidy scheme in place to make them more accessible. He noted that farmers are the hope of the state and the nation, as hunger is now a security threat.
The governor expressed his determination to make Taraba State the national leader in food security, leveraging its vast land and potentials in crop and cattle production. He emphasized that the state has no business with hunger and is now prepared to become the ultimate hub of food production.
The event, which is part of the three-day program commemorating Governor Kefas’ first year in office, saw the commissioner of Agriculture, Professor Nick Namessan, outline the terms of the agreement between the government and farmers. Beneficiaries will pay 40% of the cost of the tractors, while the government will cover the remaining 60%.
The government will also provide mobile maintenance services to ensure swift repairs in case of breakdowns. Representatives of the Czech Republic Ambassador to Nigeria expressed their delight at the business relationship with the state, while leaders of farmers’ groups pledged their support for the scheme.
Traditional rulers, including the Aku Uka of Wukari and the Emir of Muri, attended the program, which was also graced by top government functionaries. Former governor of Taraba State, Rev. Jolly Nyame, commended Governor Kefas for his efforts in restoring the glory of the state’s agricultural sector.
