Organised labour in Taraba State has declared an indefinite strike to commence on Monday, Aug. 11, over alleged irregularities by the state’s Biometric Data Capture Committee.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), in a joint statement on Friday, said the decision followed a resolution reached at a meeting of the Joint State Administrative Council on Aug. 6.
The statement, signed by NLC Chairman Peter Jediel and TUC Chairman Sule Abasu, accused the biometric committee of engaging in illegal practices that had adversely affected workers.
It also criticised the state government for failing to respond to an earlier ultimatum.
“Following the mandate of the Joint State Administrative Council, the leadership is to take all necessary action to effectuate the ultimatum in collaboration with other stakeholders to check the illegality perpetrated by the biometric data capture committee,” the statement said.
The unions resolved that mobilisation for the strike should begin immediately, urging workers, civil society organisations and residents to prepare for its impact.
“All units and branches of affiliates of the NLC and TUC, including civil societies, should form strike implementation committees to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in their respective ministries, departments and agencies,” it added.
The unions said the industrial action would continue until their grievances were addressed by the state government.
