Taraba Monarch Warns Against Use Of Chemicals, Explosives For Fishing

The Chief of Mutumbiyu in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed, has warned fishermen in his domain to desist from using chemicals and explosives for fishing, describing the practice as destructive and unlawful.

The monarch gave the warning on Wednesday at his palace in Mutumbiyu shortly after the turbanning of Alhaji Bala Jambari as Sarkin Tarun (Leader of Fishermen) and Alhaji Tukura Julde as Danrimin Mutumbiyu.

He said the harmful fishing methods had led to the drastic reduction in fish populations and extinction of several aquatic species across rivers and ponds in the state.

“Fish populations have drastically reduced, and many species are now extinct. Those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods are suffering. This is largely due to the use of chemicals and explosives,” he said.

Alhaji Sulaiman urged fishermen to abide by existing environmental laws in the state which prohibit such practices, adding that the traditional council would collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure full enforcement.

He tasked the newly installed Sarkin Tarun with monitoring fishing activities in the area and sensitising his members on the dangers of illegal fishing.

“Your role as leader of fishermen comes with great responsibility. You must ensure that your members do not engage in practices that destroy our aquatic ecosystem,” the monarch said.

He further urged residents of the area to remain peaceful and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing the importance of community participation in environmental protection and security.
