Alhaji Abdulmutalib Jankada, the traditional ruler of Sansani chiefdom in Gassol local government area of Taraba state, has been tragically killed in an attack at his palace.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when gunmen, arriving on motorcycles, infiltrated the palace and fatally shot the monarch, according to eyewitnesses.
Reportedly, the assailants targeted the monarch directly, firing multiple shots at him before fleeing the scene with his phones. The attack caught both palace guards and family members off guard, leaving them unaware of the unfolding tragedy.
Musa Sansani, a resident of Sansani town, recounted hearing gunshots but not realizing they originated from the palace. He mentioned that the late chief had mentioned plans to attend the Nwonyo fishing Festival in Ibbi on Friday and Saturday, leading residents to assume he had left town.
Following the discovery of the monarch’s body by his wife, shock and grief swept through the community, prompting mourning and preparations for his burial after Friday prayers.
This is not the first time Alhaji Abdulmutalib Jankada has faced danger. Two years ago, he was abducted along the Jalingo-Wukari road, and ransom was paid for his release.
The killing of Alhaji Jankada adds to a disturbing trend in Taraba state, with approximately seven traditional rulers falling victim to similar attacks in recent years.
Attempts to reach out to Taraba Commissioner of Police, David lloyanomon, for comment, but he directed inquiries to the command’s public relations officer, SP Usman Abdullahi. However, Abdullahi stated he was unwell and unable to provide a statement at this time.
