
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced its 2025 intervention allocations, disbursing ₦2.8 billion to each university, ₦2.1 billion to colleges of education, and ₦1.9 billion to polytechnics across the country.
The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arch. Sonny Echono, disclosed this during a strategic workshop with heads of beneficiary institutions in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of utilizing past allocations efficiently while ensuring prompt procurement processes for the 2025 disbursement.
According to Echono, each university will receive ₦2,560,562,352.66 under the normal allocation and an additional ₦300 million as a zonal allocation, bringing the total to ₦2,860,562,352.66. Polytechnics will get ₦1,794,335,731.71 as normal allocation and ₦200 million as zonal allocation, totaling ₦1,994,335,731.71. Colleges of education will receive ₦1,978,428,260.79 plus ₦200 million, amounting to ₦2,178,428,260.79.
The 2025 allocation structure includes:
91.08% for direct disbursement (48.90% as annual direct disbursement, 42.18% as special direct disbursement)
8.72% for designated projects
0.20% as a stabilization fund
Echono stated that TETFund would focus on upgrading and rehabilitating educational facilities, research, and innovation. Other priority areas include:
Expansion of medical education infrastructure and adoption of medical simulation technologies
Establishment of mechanized farms in select universities
Provision of student hostels through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP)
Investment in alternative energy solutions for institutions
Enhanced campus security and disaster recovery measures
To boost research, TETFund will sustain the National Research Fund, support the Triple Helix initiative (academia-industry-government collaboration), and expand R&D commercialization. Plans are also in place for:
Two new multipurpose research laboratories
Three new agricultural demonstration farms
A Diaspora Outreach/Exchange Program
A Staff Support Fund for tertiary institutions
Student Startup/Innovation Grants and new Entrepreneurship for Innovation Hubs
Echono reiterated TETFund’s commitment to reducing dependence on government funding by encouraging private-sector partnerships.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and other key stakeholders.
