
The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the death of three teenagers who drowned while swimming in a river at Jinkiri Village, Tirwun Ward, in Bauchi Local Government Area.
The victims, identified as Habibu Mohammed (16), Abubakar Mohammed (16), and Zailani Sule (14), all from Durum Village, reportedly drowned around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmad Mohammed Wakil, said in a statement that the boys had earlier engaged in mining activities before entering the river to swim.
“Efforts to obtain medical assistance proved abortive, as the victims were confirmed dead before arrival at the hospital,” the statement said.
Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed condolences to the families and called for increased public awareness on water safety, especially during the rainy season.
He said an investigation into the incident had commenced, and the remains of the deceased were released to their families after medical examination at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.
The Command assured residents of its continued commitment to safety education and community engagement to prevent such tragedies.
