Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation, Names Disu Acting IGP

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

This is contained in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the statement, Egbetokun tendered his resignation citing pressing family considerations.

The President, it said, received the resignation earlier on Tuesday and expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

Tinubu commended his dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Following the development, the President approved the appointment of AIG Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, pending further constitutional processes.

Tinubu said Disu’s experience, operational capacity and leadership qualities would provide direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time.

In accordance with the Police Act 2020, the President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

After the council’s consideration, the nominee’s name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and enhancing the capacity and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
