President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he had spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late former president, to offer his deepest condolences.

“As a mark of honour and national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast,” the statement read.

The President has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late leader back to Nigeria for burial.

Buhari, who was first Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, later became a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.

The Federal Government is expected to announce details of national mourning and funeral arrangements in due course.
