Tinubu Renames University Of Maiduguri After Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made on Thursday during an expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, held in honour of the deceased leader.

“Before we take the prayers — in honour of his [Buhari’s] memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded) — can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu stated.

The pronouncement was greeted with a round of applause from ministers, senior government officials, and other dignitaries, including Yusuf Buhari, son of the late former president.

The expanded FEC meeting was convened to pay tribute to Buhari, who died recently in London after a prolonged illness.

Tinubu, who described Buhari as a patriotic leader and statesman, said renaming the institution was a mark of national honour and a testament to Buhari’s enduring legacy in promoting education, security, and national unity.

Further details about the formal process and timeline for the name change are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Education in due course.

Former and serving members of Buhari’s cabinet, top military chiefs, and political leaders were in attendance at the event, which featured prayers and reflections on the former president’s service to the nation.
