Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled a coordinated terrorist attack on their positions in Mallam Fatori, Borno, neutralising more than 80 insurgents, including three high-profile commanders.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai, the attack occurred in the early hours of the day and involved a five-pronged assault by terrorists advancing on foot and supported by armed drones.
The statement said the insurgents targeted troops’ locations, particularly along the frontage of Bravo Company from the Duguri general area, but were met with strong resistance.
It explained that the troops, having anticipated the attack, executed a well-coordinated offensive-defensive operation, effectively disrupting and routing the attackers.
“The terrorists were engaged with superior firepower and tactical manoeuvre, leading to the neutralisation of no fewer than 80 insurgents,” it said.
The military added that the operation was reinforced by close air support from the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, alongside allied air assets from neighbouring Niger, which carried out precision strikes on fleeing insurgents.
It further disclosed that troops recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the scene, including dozens of AK-47 rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade tubes, improvised explosive devices, ammunition, communication equipment and drone components.
Despite the intensity of the attack, only four soldiers were wounded in action and have since been stabilised, while further battle damage assessment is ongoing.
The statement also confirmed the killing of three senior terrorist commanders identified as Mallam Abdulrahman Gobara, Mallam Ba Yuram and Abou Ayyuba.
It noted that several other fighters were also eliminated during the operation, describing the development as a significant blow to the terrorists’ command structure and operational capacity in the area.
The military said the successful defence of Mallam Fatori underscored the growing effectiveness and resilience of troops in the North-East theatre.
It reassured residents that the security situation in the area remained under control and urged the public to remain vigilant and disregard unverified reports.
The High Command commended the troops for their gallantry and encouraged them to sustain ongoing operations against insurgents.
