Two staff members of the Damboa Local Education Authority (LEA) were on Monday killed in a bomb explosion along the Damboa–Maiduguri highway in Borno.
It was gathered that the victims, Blessings Luka and Gideon Bitterleaf, were travelling from Damboa to Maiduguri when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased were seated in front of a Toyota Hiace van conveying mangoes when it hit an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by insurgents.
The explosion killed the two instantly and left several others with varying degrees of injuries.
A source at the Damboa Local Government confirmed the incident, describing the victims as dedicated education officers who served the council diligently.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the scene while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on highways in Borno, raising fresh concerns over the safety of commuters in the region.
