UNIMAID Professor Regains Freedom After Boko Haram Abduction

A senior academic staff member of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Professor Dani Mamman, has regained his freedom after being abducted by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Friday along the Madagali–Gwoza axis.

Family associates confirmed that the respected scholar was released from captivity on Saturday evening. He is currently in the custody of the Nigerian Army in Gwoza, where security officials are making arrangements to transport him safely and reunite him with his family, insha’Allah.

Professor Mamman, a professor in the Department of Islamic Studies and a former Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIMAID branch, was declared missing after the commercial vehicle conveying him and other passengers from Yola was ambushed by insurgents.

During the attack, passengers reportedly scattered into the bush in a desperate attempt to escape. Following the incident, there had been no information on Professor Mamman’s whereabouts, and efforts to reach his mobile phone proved futile—raising deep concern among colleagues, family members, and the academic community.

The news of his release has brought relief across UNIMAID and the wider academic circle, with many expressing gratitude for his safety and urging authorities to intensify security along vulnerable routes in the region.

Further details on his condition and the circumstances surrounding his release are expected to emerge as the military finalizes his evacuation and debriefing.
