University Bursars Explain Reasons Behind Delay in March Salaries

The Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities (ABNU) has raised concerns over challenges affecting the payment of March salaries and overheads for federal university staff across Nigeria.

In a letter dated April 7, 2026, and addressed to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the association said the difficulty stemmed from a malfunction in the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) platform.

The letter, signed by the Chairperson of ABNU, Dr Hadiza Goje, explained that the final approval stage required to complete salary and overhead transactions had been blocked and disabled.

According to the association, the disruption has significantly affected the timely processing and disbursement of March salaries and overhead payments to role players on the platform.

ABNU noted that the final approval function is critical to completing personnel cost and overhead transactions, stressing that its inaccessibility had stalled several pending payments.

The association appealed to the Accountant General’s office for urgent intervention to restore the functionality of the GIFMIS platform to enable the completion of all pending transactions.

It added that prompt action would help mitigate the adverse effects currently being experienced by affected institutions and staff nationwide.
