Allegations of planned large-scale vote buying have emerged against an opposition party in Adamawa State ahead of the Aug. 16 Ganye State Constituency bye-election.
While the PDP candidate, Barr. Joda, and his campaign team are reportedly engaging in intensive ward-to-ward mobilisation, sources allege that the opposition is preparing to distribute cash and food items to influence voters.
Concerned citizens told Insight Northeast that on Sunday night, several trailer-loads of food items were moved into a compound owned by a prominent opposition figure in Ganye. The items are allegedly scheduled for distribution on Thursday, two days before the polls.
Observers have warned that such actions, if true, amount to weaponising poverty and hunger. They urged residents to accept any offers without compromising their right to vote for candidates of their choice, in order to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to respond to the allegations.
