A powerful windstorm swept through two neighboring communities in the Yola South area of the Adamawa State capital on Tuesday night, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming one life.
According to eyewitnesses, the storm hit the Wuro-Chekke and Mbambam communities, causing widespread damage to homes and buildings. In Wuro-Chekke, a wall collapsed, resulting in the death of one person, whose identity has not been confirmed.
In Mbambam, the storm tore off roofs and damaged walls, affecting several private homes and the staff quarters of Mopol 14 Barracks. Residents reported hearing loud sounds as the storm hit, followed by a brief rainfall that brought some relief from the heat.
While the storm caused damage in the two communities, the rest of Yola experienced a welcome cooling effect after a hot afternoon and evening. The temperature, which had reached a high of 42 degrees Celsius at 3 pm, dropped significantly after the rain.
Emergency services and local authorities have been deployed to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected residents. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and response in the face of extreme weather events.
In related news, the Adamawa State Government has urged residents to take necessary precautions during the rainy season, which is expected to continue in the coming weeks. The government has also pledged to provide support to affected communities and individuals.
