Workers Slam FG Over Luxury Packages for Ex-Service Chiefs, Demand Payment of N35,000 Wage Award

Federal civil servants have criticised the Federal Government for what they describe as “misplaced priorities” following the approval of luxury retirement packages for former service chiefs and heads of security agencies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The new package reportedly includes bulletproof sport utility vehicles (SUVs), Toyota Prado Jeeps for spouses, and a $20,000 annual medical allowance.

This development has sparked outrage among federal workers who are still awaiting the payment of the ₦35,000 wage award promised by the government several months ago.

Speaking under the umbrella of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), members condemned the approval, describing it as “an insult to suffering Nigerian workers.”

“It’s heartbreaking that the same government that claims there’s no money to pay the ₦35,000 wage award is suddenly able to fund bulletproof vehicles and dollar allowances for retired service chiefs,” a senior civil servant lamented.

Another worker described the move as “a slap in the face of every honest civil servant still struggling to survive amidst high inflation and a rising cost of living.”

Labour activists also joined in the criticism, warning that the decision could deepen resentment within the public sector and possibly trigger fresh industrial unrest.

Analysts said the move reflects growing inequality between the political and military elite and the ordinary workforce, urging the Tinubu administration to review its spending priorities and honour commitments to workers before extending such luxury benefits.
