
The Yobe State House of Assembly has commenced detailed scrutiny of the 2026 Finance and Appropriation Bills presented by Governor Mai Mala Buni, aimed at consolidating the state’s developmental gains and improving service delivery.
The bills scaled through second reading on the floor of the House on Wednesday after extensive deliberations by members.
Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, said the Constitution empowers the legislature to thoroughly examine the annual budget proposals to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
He explained that when passed into law, the bills would enable the executive arm to deliver more dividends of democracy to citizens through the effective implementation of both recurrent and capital projects.
Hon. Yusuf urged his colleagues to support the financial proposals, emphasizing their importance to the socio-economic growth and stability of Yobe State.
In their separate contributions, the members representing Mamudo and Damaturu II constituencies, Hon. Mohammed Isa Bello and Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, lauded Governor Buni for presenting what they described as one of the largest and most comprehensive budgets in the state’s history.
They commended the governor for prioritizing key developmental projects that would have a direct and positive impact on the lives of ordinary citizens, especially in areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, referred the bills to the House Standing Committee on Finance and Appropriation for further legislative action and detailed consideration.
In a related development, the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation has released a timetable for the 2026 budget defense by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), signaling the start of the next phase of legislative oversight.
The budget defense sessions are expected to provide a platform for MDAs to justify their allocations and outline strategies for achieving the fiscal year’s objectives.
