The Yobe State House of Assembly has advanced legislative work on a bill seeking the establishment of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission in the state.
The bill, which originated from the executive arm, scaled second reading on Thursday after deliberations by members during plenary.
Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, said the proposed commission would promote social justice, equitable representation, and prevent discrimination against vulnerable groups.
He said the commission would help foster inclusivity and mutual respect across cultural, ethnic, and social lines in the state.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Mohammed Isa Bello, Hon. Sanda Kara Bade, and Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, supported the bill, describing it as timely and necessary for inclusive governance.
Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, constituted an ad hoc committee to further examine the bill.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Yusuf, has been given two months to submit its report for further legislative action.
